Theories?!?!

Today we went over theories in film. Which are: 

  • Identity Theory, by: David Gaunlett
 According to Gauntlett, people typically belong to bigger groups of people who are similar to them, and so identities are only reflected by the media rather than created.

  • Queer Theory, by: Teresa de Lauretis
According to StudioBinder, "Queer Theory subverts traditional institutions of society that are based on the heteronormative model of human sexuality, and acknowledges the broad spectrum of sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity."

Tv Show based around queer characters.
  • Steven Universe
Has queer characters as well. 

  • Cultivation Theory, by: George Gerbner
Watchers' views begin to alter to conform to the conventional representations of characters that they encounter in television programs.

Example:
  • Batman and Superman
 

  • Reception Theory, by: Stuart Hall (*The one I was assigned to do)
That media texts contain a variety of messages that are encoded (made/inserted) by producers and then decoded (understood) by audiences.

  • Agenda-Setting Theory, by: Maxwell McCombs and Donald Lewis Shaw
The concept that media (like news or film), can influence what the viewers think about based on the attention at receives.

  • Copycat Theory, by: David Dressler
The alleged tendency of sensational publicity about violent murders or suicides to result in more of the same imitation.

  • Active Audience Theory, by: Stuart Hall
When a viewer responds, engages, and interprets media messages, they are said to be active and capable of challenging the message.

  • Uses and Gratifications Theory, by: Katz and Blumler
Explains why the audiences actively choose to engage with media product driven by 4 main reasons.

  • Entertainment
Watch for the thrill.


  • Education
Speaks on valuable topics like black history.


  • Social Interaction
Engage in discussion on social media.


  • Relatability
Teens can relate when watching.


  • Postmodernism Theory, by: Jean-François Lyotard
Usually challenges ingrained views on a variety of topics, including social progress, human nature, value systems, and objective truth.
